On December 27, 2022, Ruth Coles, at the time President of Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society, was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, by Consul General Maruyama. The ceremony was held at his official residence as part of the 2022 Autumn Conferment of Decoration on Foreign Nationals, with fellow Nikkei Place directors and colleagues among those in attendance.
Ruth is recognized for her contributions to enhancing the welfare of the Japanese Canadian community and promoting friendly relations between Japan and Canada.
“Ruth has always led with her compassion and desire to help others. She has dedicated her life to building Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society. In the 1980s, she was part of the development concept of constructing a multi-purpose complex called Nikkei Place with New Sakura so built in 1998, Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in 2000 and Nimi Nikkei Home in 2002.
